March 1 - Chicks and Salsa

This morning as we were driving to school, Elyse said, "Hey, do you want me to read "Chicks and Salsa" to you?" NEVER miss an opportunity to hear a kid read to you...and if Elyse is volunteering to read, I'm all over it. "Chicks and Salsa" is a book Carolyn discovered at the library or a book fair or something a few years ago...book order? I don't know - anyway, it's a book on our shelf about the farm animals getting tired of their usual food. So the rooster starts spying on the the farmer's wife who has taken an interest in cooking shows. He watches enough and the chickens raid the garden and make salsa with their findings ("though nobody was quite certain where the chickens got the chips.")...the ducks make guacamole and the pigs make nachos, etc. It's very cute. I highly recommend it.

Inspired by this story (and the recipe in the back of the book), we decided to try making home made salsa. We called our favorite salsa maker - who also makes our favorite salsa - Kelly. When we finally got home this evening, we made salsa. Included is a picture of the "Mielke Chicks and Salsa". Carolyn says she'll post the recipe we used for the salsa.
