March 17 - Moby Dick

OK, none of us have actually read Moby Dick, but the captain of our "ship" made reference to it this morning...so it seems an appropriate book title for the day.

We went on Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari and it did not disappoint! We boarded the boat at 10:30 a.m. and in a very short time were on top of a pod of dolphins. AMAZING! The boat had a "pod" underneath that you were supposed to be able to watch the sea life as though you were in the water with them. As they were herding children first into the pod, we got word from another ship that whales had been spotted and we had to hurry to that instead of enjoying more of the dolphins.

We got to the whales...and again...were not disappointed! We followed a couple different California gray whales. It was way cool - saw the blow, the back and finally they showed their tails and away they went. We are always amazed at these beautiful - and huge - sea mammals. I am constantly amazed the knowledge of our tour guides and I always learn something - like all the barnacles and lice that live on the gray whale!

Finally, we saw sea lions (learned the difference between sea lions - they have ear flaps - and seals - they have ear holes) and finally returned to the shore for brownies. Came home and had a nap before company arrived for dinner. GREAT day on the water!
